Bringing the Outside In

Many GYDE clients want to incorporate elements of the natural landscape into their home design. With summer just around the corner here in Jackson, we are reminded why so many call the Tetons our home.

In this blog, we are sharing the Lariat project as an example of how GYDE worked with clients who wanted to incorporate the beauty of the wilderness in their residential project. Every client has their own take on “bringing the outside in.” Our goal is to help bring your vision to life.

Our process always starts with listening and learning about the client’s wants and needs for the space. We work alongside our clients to understand their vision and carry it through to every detail. As problem solvers, we’re unconstrained by the traditional bounds of architecture— we design solutions.

For this residential project, the clients brought us their favorite looks from magazines, design websites, and other sources to help communicate the elements they loved. They wanted their home to be a retreat that included multi-use indoor and outdoor spaces. They also wanted their home to blend and transition into the natural landscape surrounding it.

The lot was “classic Wyoming”, complete with plenty of sagebrush and lichen-covered boulders. It had beautiful views of the mountains surrounding downtown and was nestled in an established neighborhood. Our goal was to transform one of the last undeveloped lots in the neighborhood into a mountain home that embraced the views while maintaining privacy and giving the clients the feeling that theirs was the only house around. Working within the existing building envelope, we placed the floor-to-ceiling windows on an aspect of the house that provided views and privacy. We balanced large windows with rustic stone and simple woods so the transitional spaces could blend into the sagebrush and rocky terrain. In the transitional spaces, we again wanted to have the patio areas oriented toward the views without having to look into the neighboring lots. Landscaping and vegetation were strategically placed to protect both the homeowners and existing residences.

From a couple of design inspiration images collected by the clients, we were able to make their dream home a reality collaboratively.

Bring us your ideas and goals, and let’s design something exceptional together.
